The Nurses Collective NZ

Picture
In 2021, thousands of nurses, carers, and midwives lost their jobs for upholding informed choice and professional integrity for themselves and their patients. The Nurses Collective (formerly Nurses for Freedom NZ) was formed to support those impacted by Covid, while also addressing broader issues that risk eroding the heart of nursing in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Our mission is to bring common sense, integrity, and balanced thinking to a profession facing ongoing and complex challenges. We are grounded in the core values of nursing—compassion, clinical expertise, and advocacy—and are committed to presenting thoughtful, evidence‑informed perspectives that empower both nurses and patients to make informed choices, without advancing any single agenda.

We recognise that not everyone will agree with our approach. We deliberately draw on both lived experience and professional expertise, seeking constructive solutions without discarding what already works. Despite setbacks, we remain focused on building bridges between established practice and future possibilities for healthcare in New Zealand—working toward a system where professional voices are heard, ethical care is protected, and every choice is respected

We Aim To Provide:
  • Nursing Advocacy - advocating for ethical practice, informed consent, and the professional voice of nurses, carers, and midwives in a changing healthcare landscape;
  • Community, rebuilding & future focus - Bridge‑building between traditional nursing values and future healthcare challenges;
  • Support & informal representation - Peer support for nurses, carers, and midwives, including those stood down, dismissed, or excluded from return to practice during Covid;
  • Support for ethical and professional concerns - For nurses who feel silenced or pressured;
  • Policy, submissions & a public voice -  Evidence‑based submissions, policy critique, and public commentary grounded in nursing ethics and clinical practice;
  • Education - for nurses and the public;
  • Ethics, consent & professional integrity - Guidance relating to informed consent, coercion, and professional judgement, including published position statements;
  • A Professional voice - Submissions to regulators and councils

Logo: Flax weaving in New Zealand finds its roots in the traditions of the Māori, the indigenous people of Aotearoa (New Zealand). The Māori hold a deep reverence for flax, considering it a treasure and an integral part of their cultural identity. The process of weaving flax is deeply interconnected with values and narratives. It is a way to honor ancestors, connect with the natural world, and preserve cultural heritage.
